THE BEAUTIFUL CHIN
ANALYSIS OF THE CHIN
“Well, the last time I had a picture taken I could hardly see my eyes because of the weight of heavy eyelid. Then I paid attention to how I was actually using my eyes and I really noticed when I was looking at anything especially the computer I was straining my forehead to see better. Since I have had it done I no longer have to lift the forehead and tilt my head to see. It is amazing! I love…” D. Rock 63 Yrs Old with Fat Droopy Eyes – Salt Lake City, UT
HOW DOES AGING AFFECT THE CHIN?
The chin is intimately related to the mouth (lips), jawline and neck. However, certain changes are very specific and need identification, delineation and specific management. Without this attention to chin aging, results of facial
and neck rejuvenation will be sub-optimal.
Sometimes, what is called a “weak chin” may not be the effect of age but congenital. Sometimes these are familial characteristics. They may be “weak” in the sense that they do not have the prominence of the vertical height. Either can result in what is termed a “weak chin”.
An interesting phenomenon that affects us as we age is one of the “quivering chin.” The mentalis muscle tends to contract involuntarily and results not only in minor but noticeable movements but also irregularities of the chin.
Downward descent of the premental fat can result in what is cruelly termed the “witch’s chin”. This is most apparent when viewed from the side. Although it is seen in all races, some are more prone to it than others.
Hair growth on chins is a curse delivered to us as we age. The hair not only tends to be unwelcome, but will often be stiffer than normal hair and irregular in growth.
PORES AND WRINKLES
The peri-oral region gets a lot of “wear and tear” from washing, cleaning, etc, resulting in more advanced aging with wrinkles, pores, lines of animation and lines related to loss of subcutaneous tissue.
Jowls and prejowl sulci exacerbate the aging of the chin. When addressing the face, careful attention to the chin and surrounding structures pays dividends!
